Tacoma: Rain, Roots, and Realness

Tacoma was unexpected in the best way. I didn’t go there chasing sunshine or nightlife—I went to breathe, reflect, and connect with family. It rained most days, but honestly? It matched my mood at the time. Peaceful, grounded, and a little bit moody in a way that helped me slow down and appreciate the smaller moments. Tacoma isn’t loud like Seattle—but it’s got heart.

🍴 Best Places to Eat

  • Southern Kitchen
This place felt like love on a plate. I had fried catfish, yams, and collard greens that tasted like someone’s grandma made them just for me. The sweet tea and cornbread sealed the deal. Comfort food with a real Southern soul, right in the Pacific Northwest.

  • Duke’s Seafood – Ruston Way
Waterfront dining with chowder that warmed me up after a rainy walk along the bay. Their crab cakes were on point, and I sat by the window watching the fog roll in. Cozy and scenic—my kind of vibe.

  • Indochine Asian Dining Lounge
For something more upscale and modern, this spot surprised me. Beautiful decor, bold flavors. I ordered pad thai and spring rolls, and everything came out fast and fresh. A great place to reset and recharge.

🌲 Top Things to Do

  • Point Defiance Park & Zoo
I wasn’t planning to visit a zoo, but Point Defiance is more than that. It’s a massive park with forest trails, gardens, and views of Puget Sound that stop you in your tracks. I spent a morning here walking through the trees and letting the stillness settle in.

  • Museum of Glass
This was one of my favorite stops. The live glassblowing demos were mesmerizing, and the art felt both modern and ancient. I left inspired—and a little in awe of what human hands can create.

  • Wright Park Conservatory
Rainy afternoon? No problem. I ducked into this small botanical garden and spent time among tropical plants, fountains, and peace. Sometimes it’s the quietest places that bring you back to center.

🌙 Nightlife & Evening Energy

Tacoma isn’t a party town—and that was perfectly fine for the space I was in. My nights here were more about winding down than turning up.

  • The Mix
One of the more lively spots in downtown Tacoma. It’s LGBTQ+ friendly, has great drinks, and often features karaoke or drag shows. The night I went, the energy was fun and welcoming, like being at a cousin’s house party.

  • Tacoma Comedy Club
I grabbed dinner and hit up a comedy show on a whim—and I’m glad I did. Laughed hard, met cool people, and felt the city come alive in its own laid-back way.

  • Evening Drive Along Ruston Way
I drove along the waterfront one night with the windows down and music low. The view of the bay, the industrial lights reflecting on the water—it was lowkey therapeutic.

Tacoma didn’t try to entertain me. It gave me space. Space to be still, to think, to reconnect. And in that stillness, I found something I didn’t know I needed: a reminder that not every trip has to be a “turn up.” Some are meant to ground you—and this one did just that.
