New Orleans: Music in the Streets, Magic in the Air

New Orleans doesn’t just welcome you—it pulls you in. The moment I stepped off the plane, I could feel the rhythm of the city in the air. There’s something alive in New Orleans that’s hard to explain until you’re walking through the French Quarter with a beignet in one hand and brass band music echoing from a corner. And this trip hit even harder because we attended Essence Fest—a celebration of Black culture, music, empowerment, and straight-up joy.

🍽️ Best Places to Eat

  • Café Du Monde
I had to start here. I sat outside with powdered sugar everywhere and zero regrets. Beignets with café au lait just hit different when you’re sitting near Jackson Square watching the city move.

  • Dooky Chase’s Restaurant
This wasn’t just a meal—it was a moment. Steeped in history, Black excellence, and flavor that hugs your soul. I ordered the fried chicken and gumbo, and it felt like a church plate elevated to royalty status.

  • Acme Oyster House
Chargrilled oysters, buttery and sizzling with garlic, right off Bourbon Street. I pulled up a seat at the bar, made friends with the folks beside me, and left with a full belly and even fuller heart.

🎺 Top Things to Do

  • Essence Festival of Culture
From panels that poured into our purpose to performances that had the whole stadium shaking, Essence Fest was more than an event—it was an experience. We danced, laughed, learned, and connected with beautiful Black energy everywhere. Being part of something that big, that bold, and that powerful was the heart of this entire trip.

  • French Quarter Wandering
I didn’t even need a plan here. Every street had something—live jazz on Royal Street, voodoo shops tucked between bars, and architecture that makes you want to slow down and look up. I wandered, got lost, found music, and just flowed.

  • Steamboat Natchez Jazz Cruise
I booked this river cruise not knowing what to expect—and it ended up being a highlight. Live jazz, views of the Mississippi, and a slow ride that made me appreciate the city from a new angle.

  • The Whitney Plantation Tour (short drive away)
A heavy experience, but an important one. I walked the grounds and learned the history many skip over. It was emotional, powerful, and reminded me why travel should always include understanding, not just escape.

🌃 Best Nightlife Spots

  • Frenchmen Street
Forget Bourbon. This is where the soul of the city lives at night. I ducked into a few bars with live jazz, reggae, and even a brass band that had the whole place on its feet. It was real, raw, and electric.

  • Bourbon Street (for the chaos)
I had to do it—at least once. It’s loud, messy, and a lot, but I danced in the street, caught beads I didn’t ask for, and laughed more than I probably should’ve. No judgment, just fun.

  • The Carousel Bar at Hotel Monteleone
A rotating bar inside a historic hotel? Yes please. It was a slower, classy vibe—perfect for a nightcap and people-watching. The room moved slowly, but the drinks were strong and smooth.

New Orleans is flavor in every sense—on your tongue, in your ears, in your heart. It’s a city that reminds you that life is meant to be felt. Essence Fest made it even more electric—Black joy, culture, music, and sisterhood all wrapped into one unforgettable trip. I didn’t leave NOLA rested, but I left full. Full of music, memory, and moments that’ll stick with me forever.
