Buffalo, NY

Buffalo: Unexpected Gems & Real City Energy

Buffalo might not be the first place people think of when they plan a getaway, but that’s exactly why I loved it. It wasn’t crowded or curated—it was real. Gritty in places, beautiful in others, and full of surprises. I came with no expectations and left with stories, flavor, and a deeper appreciation for cities that move quietly but hold so much history.

🍴 Best Places to Eat

  • Anchor Bar
I had to start with the place where Buffalo wings were born. Crispy, saucy, and served with a side of local pride. I got the traditional hot wings and a cold drink, and it definitely lived up to the hype.

  • Toutant
A Southern-inspired spot in downtown Buffalo that caught me off guard in the best way. Shrimp and grits, fried chicken, and biscuits that tasted like home—even though I was up north.

  • West Side Bazaar
This place is a whole vibe. It’s a multicultural food market where you can grab Burmese noodles, Ethiopian coffee, and Jamaican patties all under one roof. I love a space that brings cultures together through food—and this one did it beautifully.

🏙️ Top Things to Do

  • Canalside
Right on the waterfront, this area had everything from kayak rentals to public art and live music. I sat by the water, watched the boats pass, and enjoyed some needed slow time. It’s where locals hang—and I could see why.

  • Buffalo AKG Art Museum
I’m glad I made time for this. The art was bold and thought-provoking, and the building itself felt like walking through a creative story. Perfect rainy day escape.

  • Niagara Falls (Short Drive Away)
It’s only about 30 minutes out, so I took the trip—and I’m glad I did. Standing at the edge of that power and watching the water crash down was humbling. Even if you’ve been before, it never gets old.

🌙 Best Nightlife & Chill Spots

  • Allen Street Bar Scene
I didn’t expect Buffalo to have a solid nightlife scene, but the Allen Street area showed up. Bars, lounges, and live music venues all tucked along one walkable strip. I hopped between a jazz lounge and a cozy dive bar and felt right at home.

  • Rec Room
This spot had more of a club feel—DJ spinning, lights flashing, and the crowd dancing like it was a Friday night even if it wasn’t. Great energy if you’re in the mood to turn up a bit.

  • Resurgence Brewing Company
If you’re more into chill vibes, this craft brewery had fire drinks and outdoor seating. I pulled up, ordered a flight, and ended up in a deep conversation with a couple from Toronto about travel and food. It was that kind of night.

Buffalo taught me that every city has a story—and sometimes the best ones are told in the background, away from the spotlight. I didn’t go there to be impressed, but I left impressed anyway. It gave me warmth, flavor, and a little grit—and that’s a combo I’ll never forget.
